Bank Fishing

Rob Jones. Bait fishing is strictly by arrangement with, and agreement of, the owner.

  • Wading is effective in early and late season. Fish lie close to the shore so a short cast and step, cast and step will produce results.
  • Drifting boat. The predominant winds are westerly so long drifts down either shore are easily maintained and produce the best results. That being said, if there is a good wave, trout will rise throughout the loch and provide exciting sport. In these latter conditions a drogue and/or ghillie are essential for safety, control and catching fish!
  • Etiquette. Do not troll, motor or row across the path of a drifting boat. Do not moor and bank fish off the crannog.

Tackle

Rods 9' - 10'6" to take AFTM 5-7. A tapered leader to hold three flies in a traditional cast. (NOTE. Due to the presence of trees and undergrowth a leader length that does not exceed the length of your rod is advisable when wading.) Floating lines only are required from the shore and also provide the more exciting sport from a boat. Good fish, however, may be drawn from greater depths and it is well to have the option of intermediate and sinking lines.
